Follow the Drinking Gourd

February is African-American History Month, so join us for a multi-media celebration based on Jeanette Winter's picture book Follow the Drinking Gourd about the Underground Railroad.  We'll read the story, listen to the song that it's based on, and children can participate in acting out a scene from the book.  There will also be a craft.  Refreshments provided. 

"Follow the Drinking Gourd" sounded like a simple folk song sung by slaves, but it was really a map to freedom--for hidden in the lyrics were directions to the escape route known as the Underground Railroad.
