Amistad Panel Discussion

Following the 5 p.m. viewing of the movie Amistad at the Hamilton Theater, the Bookstore will host a panel discussion and reception to talk about audience insights into and responses to the film. Refreshments will be provided.
Sponsored by the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and the Colgate Bookstore as part of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum's Induction Weekend.
The topics covered may include:
- Discussion of the accuracy of the portrayal of time, incident, and characters in the film
- Lewis Tappan’s portrayal in film
- John Quincy Adams’ important contributions during the trial in the Supreme Court and in the House of Representatives against the gag rules that stifled the anti-slavery petitions
- New York State Education Department has formed an Amistad Commission
- How the Amistad incident influenced the Abolition movement
- The motivation of the participants and the price individuals paid for freedom
