Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day
Saturday, December 3
Start Time: 10:00 AM
The Colgate Bookstore will be celebrating Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day (a new holiday being celebrated by bookstores nation-wide). This drop-in event is free and open to children of all ages and their families. The first 150 children will receive a limited-edition Official 2011 “Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day” Book Bag. No purchase is necessary.

This event is meant to help adults start (or maintain) a tradition of introducing a child in their life to the unique pleasures that bookstores provide. On this day, the Colgate Bookstore will offer door-prizes, give-aways, and refreshments. Bookstore staff will present dramatic, impromptu story-readings, help new visitors navigate the Children’s Corner, and make book recommendations. All children’s books, teen books, and toys will be 20% off.
Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day (TYCBD) was conceived in November 2010 when literary suspense writer and mother Jenny Milchman from northern New Jersey blogged about creating a special holiday for children dedicated to the institution of the local bookstore: “A place of half-hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered. Where you pluck things off shelves that are richer than jewels.” After receiving positive feedback, she created a website and chose the first Saturday in December as the new holiday. Milchman envisioned TYCBD as not only about childhood literacy, or instilling a love of reading, but of supporting bookstores as local businesses and an important part of vibrant communities. This year, nearly 150 bookstores from 35 states (plus Canada and Australia) will celebrate with special events on December 3.
